- Abstract : Although conventional wisdom says that sensory, perceptual, and cognitive abilities generally improve with development, evidence also indicates that some perceptual abilities narrow during infancy. Until recently, this evidence has only indicated that narrowing is a unisensory phenomenon. For example, it has been found that whereas young infants can discriminate nonnative (i.e., foreign) speech contrasts, nonnative faces (i.e., monkey faces; faces of people from other races), and nonnative musical patterns (i.e., rhythms from other cultures), older infants no longer do. In this talk, I will review the results of our recent work with human infants and young monkeys showing that perceptual narrowing is actually a pan-sensory and, thus, general feature of perceptual development.
