- Abstract : In this talk, I review the SERIOL model of orthographic processing and discuss its implications for developmental dyslexia. In particular, I suggest that a string's letters are normally serially encoded as sub-parts of a single object and that imposition of an attention gradient is necessary for learning this encoding during reading acquisition. I propose that many developmental dyslexics are unable to form the attention gradient and so fail to learn normal orthographic processing. Hence, the Visual Attention Span deficit observed by Valdois and colleagues in many dyslexics may indicate orthographic analysis that is qualitatively abnormal. In particular, it may reflect parallel processing of letters as individual objects. In support of this account, I present a new analysis of the trigram-identification data from Dubois et al. (2007, Cognitive Neuropsychology, p. 623-660), and address possible objections to a serial encoding of letter order.
